Stay Secure with AI

Artificial Intelligence (or AI) is the art of machines being trained to think and have the same intelligence as humans. While AI is capable of creating and assisting in different fields, there are some items to be aware of such as:

AI Chatbots – Tools such as ChatGPT and Google’s Bard can be used to answer questions and help complete tasks. These tools are constantly learning from people’s responses and improving their answers. While these tools are useful, you must make sure P3 and P4 data doesn’t get saved in their system. P2 data must be reviewed and any University-specific proprietary information needs to be redacted. AI Phone Scams – Scammers are using AI voices to do phone scams. The scammers trick the person they’ve called into thinking that the scammer is someone they know. They make them believe they’re in a state of emergency and often times ask for items of monetary value (e.g. cash, crypto, gift cards, etc.). If you suspect any wrongdoing, hangup and call the actual person so they can verify their situation.

Deepfakes and Photo Manipulation – Deepfakes use artificial intelligence to create videos and photos of fake events. This technology can map someone’s face and body to fake voice text to create a slew of disinformation as well as blackmail. It can essentially be used for a smear campaign and have malicious intent.

Disinformation Text-Based Articles – AI can be used to write articles with fake and misleading information in seconds. It can be asked to write an article based on the style of writing of an influential person thus increasing the believability of the information. It can hold biases and cause harm to individuals or the public. Bots may create fake social media accounts and impersonate a user with their style of writing leading misinformation, fake news, and have severe consequences.

As of right now, AI is a developing field. It is important to stay up to date on the safety and security of it as more research is conducted and findings are found.
